Alessandra Pollicini – Run For a Life 2014

This is me and my husband at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. We’re all smiles now, but we’ve been through some scary times. : in February 2007, after a few months of feeling unwell, he was told his kidneys were failing. In the summer of the same year he started dialysis.

In the spring of 2008 he was called from Beaumont Hospital in the early hours of a Tuesday morning… he received a kidney transplant later that day. I must admit that organ donation had not been on my mind a lot before it actually affected me. But through our experience I realised that it affects many more people than I had ever imagined – and it changes lives.

I am running this year’s Run for a Life 10K to remember my husband’s donor and to raise funds for Irish Kidney Association (IKA). The IKA do an amazing job at spreading the word about organ donation and supporting renal patients and their families. If you could spare a small donation, it would go to a very worthy cause.
