IKA Counselling Services

The IKA provides a free, comprehensive and confidential counselling service for those diagnosed with End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD), their family members and carers.

At the IKA is a national organisation requests for counselling are received from all over the country. A structure is in place that allows for referral either to the IKA counsellor based at Donor House in Dublin or if requested and appropriate a referral to a counsellor based in the person’s local area. These counsellors are professionally trained and are accredited with their professional body.

Who can access the counselling service?

• The counselling service is open to all those diagnosed with ESKD, their family and carers.

• Any individual can refer themselves to the counselling service.

• Nursing, medical or allied professionals, with the person’s permission, can also refer people for counselling.


How is the counselling service delivered?

Through the IKA counsellor for those who can attend at Donor House in Dublin.

Through a network of nationally registered locally based counsellors

ImageThe present counsellor is Mike Kelly who has been with the IKA since 2006. In 2000, after working in the mental health sector of the National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom, he established the renal counselling service at Barts and the London NHS Trust.

In keeping with the principle that all services for persons living with and affected by endstage renal disease should be equally accessible to all. The IKA information, support and education services at Donor House can be reached NATIONWIDE for the price of a local call.

The "Forget-Me-Not" flower is a symbol for life - dead wood of the Irish Kidney Association emblem represents the failed organ and the bandaged graft, with the new flower, symbolises the transplanted life giving organ.
